About Us

The Players, founded in 1953, are a thriving group of drama enthusiasts who perform two full length plays a year and who also enter the Bristol One Act Drama Festival. We have a membership of around 40 which includes our important back stage crew. We are fortunate in having our own studio in Westbury-on-Trym which is adjacent to our performance venue, the Newman Hall. Rehearsals are held twice a week on evenings to be decided once the productions are cast. Club membership also includes the Newman Hall Bar which is open to members seven days a week.

We present a wide variety of thee act plays each year by playwrights which have included J.B. Priestley, Dennis Potter, Tim Firth, Shelagh Stephenson and Alan Ayckbourn. Our one act entries give us the opportunity to tackle more adventurous scripts by playwrights such as Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter and Gillian Plowman. We are committed to producing a high standard of work and to this end have won over 130 awards in Festivals which cover all aspects of production. Five of our productions have reached the English Final of the All England One Act Drama Festival and two have won the All England and represented England at the British Final – an achievement of which we are very proud.

We are a friendly group of enthusiasts who warmly welcome new members both on and back stage. We do have social events – a Christmas party and a summer b-b-q when we welcome family members and friends and the occasional theatre visit.
